Canadian Tax Matters Education Ltd. (also referred to as "we," "us," or "our") has developed this website at canadiantaxmatters.ca (the "Website") and any associated digital resources (collectively, the "Web Services") as electronic resources providing information about our educational services relating to Canadian tax matters.
We are committed to providing our visitors and clients with Web Services that respect their privacy. This page summarizes our privacy practices. We reserve the right to change this Privacy Policy at any time, and updates will be posted to the Website.
Before using our Web Services or submitting your personal information to us, please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By using our Web Services, you signify your consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information in accordance with this Policy.
Canadian Tax Matters Education Ltd. is incorporated under the federal Canada Business Corporations Act and operates its Web Services on a pan-Canadian basis. Accordingly, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act ("PIPEDA") is the primary governing privacy statute for our commercial activities across all provinces and territories. We also have regard for the principles that informed proposed federal reform legislation (Bill C-27 / Consumer Privacy Protection Act), notwithstanding that it did not receive Royal Assent.
Subscribers located in Alberta, British Columbia, or Quebec should be aware that those provinces each have their own private-sector privacy legislation deemed substantially similar to PIPEDA — respectively, Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act, British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act, and Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (as amended by Law 25). Where any such provincial law confers additional rights on subscribers in those provinces, we are committed to respecting those rights. Quebec's Law 25 in particular applies to us on an extraterritorial basis and imposes certain additional obligations, including rights of data portability and, in some circumstances, privacy impact assessments prior to transferring personal information outside Quebec.
1. What Personal Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
We receive and store any personal information you voluntarily enter into our Web Services or otherwise provide to us. "Personal information" means information about an identifiable individual, and may include:
Identification information: your first name, last name, and title;
Contact information: your mailing address, telephone number(s), and email address;
Financial information: payment card or banking details provided to process fees for courses, products, or services;
Service and educational information: details about educational services you receive from us and any feedback you provide;
Professional information: your occupation or employer, where relevant to the services requested.
In limited circumstances, and only where necessary for a specific service and permitted by law, we may collect sensitive personal information (for example, a Social Insurance Number where required for a regulatory filing or legal purpose). We will identify and obtain your express consent in those circumstances.
1.2 Information Automatically Collected
Like many websites, ours automatically collects certain technical, non-identifying information, including:
The Internet Protocol (IP) address of your computer or device;

Pages of our Web Services that you visit and the duration of your visit.
This technical data is used for system administration, security monitoring, and to improve the Web Services. We do not routinely attempt to link this information to the identity of individual users. However, server log data containing IP addresses may, in instances of suspected criminal activity or security breach, be shared with appropriate law enforcement or investigative authorities.
1.3 Cookies and Similar Technologies
Our Web Services use "cookies" — small data files stored on your device that help us recognize returning visitors and improve your experience. We may use:
Strictly necessary cookies: required for core functionality;
Performance/analytics cookies: to understand how visitors use our Web Services (we will obtain consent before setting these);
Functionality cookies: to remember your preferences.
You may configure your browser to decline cookies; however, doing so may affect your ability to use certain features of our Web Services. Where applicable law requires opt-in consent for non-essential cookies (including under Quebec's Law 25), we will obtain that consent before setting such cookies.
2. Why We Collect and Use Your Personal Information
We collect and use personal information only for purposes a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances, and only to the extent necessary for those purposes. Specifically, we may use your personal information:
To respond to your requests for information and to deliver requested educational services, products, or resources;

For internal management analysis and service improvement purposes.
With your consent, we may also use your contact information to inform you of new educational products, services, and events offered by Canadian Tax Matters Education Ltd. You may withdraw your consent to receive marketing communications at any time by contacting us at [email protected] or by using the unsubscribe mechanism in any electronic communication we send you.
We will not use or disclose your personal information for any purpose other than those identified above, except with your consent or as required or permitted by law.
3. Consent
We rely on meaningful consent as the primary basis for collecting, using, and disclosing your personal information. Consent may be express (written or verbal) or implied, depending on the sensitivity of the information and the circumstances. We will not make consent a condition of supplying a product or service beyond what is necessary to provide that product or service.
You may withdraw consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice, by contacting our Privacy Officer (see Section 9). Please note that withdrawal of consent may affect our ability to provide certain services to you.
Where we collect personal information from minors (persons under 18), we will take appropriate steps to verify that verifiable parental or guardian consent has been obtained, or that the collection is otherwise permitted by law.
4. Sharing Your Personal Information
As a general rule, personal information we collect is held in strict confidence and is not disclosed to third parties without your consent, except in limited circumstances as permitted or required by law.
We may share your personal information in the following circumstances:
Service providers: with third-party vendors or service providers who perform services on our behalf (such as payment processors, platform hosts, email delivery services, and event organizers). These parties are authorized to use your personal information only as necessary to perform their contracted functions, and are required by contract to protect your information and not use it for other purposes.
Business affiliates: with the consent of the individual, with affiliated entities where relevant to the delivery of educational services.
Legal obligations: where required by applicable law, court order, or regulatory authority, or where necessary to protect our legal rights, enforce our agreements, or protect the safety of individuals.
Business transactions: in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or part of our business, subject to the acquiring party agreeing to treat personal information in accordance with this Policy or an equivalent.
We do not sell personal information to third parties.
5. Storage and Security of Personal Information
5.1 Location of Storage
Your personal information is stored in databases located in Canada. We do not transfer personal information to countries outside Canada unless we have obtained your consent, or we have ensured that the receiving jurisdiction provides an adequate level of protection, or unless the transfer is otherwise permitted by applicable law.
5.2 Security Safeguards
We maintain physical, organizational, and technical security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the personal information we hold, to protect it from unauthorized access, collection, use, disclosure, copying, modification, disposal, or destruction. These measures are reviewed and updated as appropriate.
In the event of a breach of security safeguards involving personal information that creates a real risk of significant harm to an individual, we will notify the affected individual(s) and the applicable Privacy Commissioner as soon as feasible after we determine the breach has occurred, in accordance with PIPEDA and PIPA reporting requirements.
5.3 Retention
We retain your personal information for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, or as required by applicable law (including for tax, accounting, and regulatory purposes). Retention periods are determined with reference to the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the information, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure, and our ability to achieve collection purposes through other means. When personal information is no longer required, it is securely destroyed or anonymized.
6. Your Rights Regarding Your Personal Information
Subject to applicable legal limitations, you have the following rights with respect to your personal information:
Access: to request confirmation of whether we hold personal information about you and, if so, to access that information, generally within 30 days of your request;
Correction: to request that inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated personal information be amended or corrected;

To exercise any of these rights, please contact our Privacy Officer using the contact information set out in Section 9. We will respond to requests within 30 days, or advise you if additional time is required.
7. Third-Party Sites and Services
Our Web Services may contain links to third-party websites or services. Please be aware that we are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those third-party sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.
We may use third-party analytics or similar tools. Any such tools will be disclosed in our cookie notice or this Privacy Policy, and we will obtain required consents before deploying non-essential third-party tracking technologies.
